Frequently Asked Questions
A pressure control is a safety and operating device that monitors refrigerant pressure at a designated point in the system and opens or closes an electrical circuit in response to preset pressure thresholds. Surplus pressure controls for HVAC and refrigeration applications serve this function in air conditioners, heat pumps, commercial refrigeration systems, and chillers.
The primary function is compressor protection: if system pressure falls below a safe minimum or rises above a safe maximum, the pressure control interrupts power to the compressor before damage occurs. Any application where refrigerant pressure directly affects equipment safety and system performance relies on a functioning pressure control.
A low pressure switch in HVAC monitors the suction side of the refrigerant circuit and shuts off the compressor when pressure drops below a preset cutout point, typically signaling a refrigerant loss, restriction, or evaporator freeze condition. A high pressure switch in HVAC monitors the discharge side and cuts out the compressor when pressure exceeds a safe upper limit, usually caused by a failed condenser fan, blocked coil, refrigerant overcharge, or restricted airflow.
Many residential and commercial systems use both controls together to protect the compressor from both pressure extremes. Some systems use a single dual pressure control that monitors both in one unit.
A head pressure control manages condenser fan operation to maintain adequate discharge pressure in low-ambient-temperature conditions, where cold outdoor air would otherwise allow head pressure to drop below the minimum needed for proper refrigerant flow.
When outdoor temperatures fall, the control cycles or modulates the condenser fan to prevent the system from operating at excessively low head pressure, which can cause liquid slugging, refrigerant floodback, and compressor damage. Head pressure controls are commonly specified for heat pumps, year-round commercial refrigeration, and rooftop units operating in cold climates.
An auto-reset pressure control automatically restores the circuit once system pressure returns to within the acceptable operating range. This is common for low-pressure controls where the triggering condition is less likely to cause immediate equipment damage. A manual-reset pressure control requires a technician to physically reset the switch after it trips, preventing the system from restarting until the underlying fault is diagnosed and corrected.
Selecting the correct reset type is not interchangeable: using an auto-reset high pressure control in an application that requires manual reset can allow a system to repeatedly restart in a fault condition, accelerating compressor damage. The system's wiring diagram and equipment documentation will specify which reset type is required.
All pressure controls in the inventory at Surplus City Liquidators are new surplus HVAC parts that have never been installed. These include manufacturer overstock, not field returns, pull-outs, and rebuilt components.
Surplus City acquires inventory directly from manufacturers offloading excess production that was not sold through standard distribution channels. Buyers receive factory-new discount HVAC pressure controls in original packaging. The savings reflect excess supply, not any reduction in component condition or specification.
The Surplus City Liquidators collection includes brand-name pressure controls from established HVAC and refrigeration manufacturers; specific brands vary based on current manufacturer surplus availability.
Ranco (distributed under the Robertshaw brand) is one of the most widely recognized names in HVAC pressure controls, with a full range of low pressure, high pressure, and dual pressure models. Other common names in this category include Honeywell, ICM Controls, and OEM-branded components from major equipment manufacturers. Inventory turns regularly; checking the collection page directly provides the most current picture of available brands and part numbers.
Start with the original part number stamped on the existing control or listed in the system's wiring diagram. Ordering by OEM part number is the most reliable method for a correct match. When the original part number is unavailable, key specification fields for any HVAC pressure switch replacement are: pressure type (low, high, or dual), cutout and cut-in PSI settings, refrigerant type compatibility, reset type (auto or manual), connection size and fitting type, and switch voltage rating.
Cross-reference guides for common HVAC pressure controls are widely available from manufacturers and wholesale distributors and can help identify compatible replacements when the original part number is no longer legible.
Pressure controls are not universally refrigerant-agnostic. Cutout and cut-in PSI settings are calibrated to the operating pressure ranges of specific refrigerants, and a control sized for R-22 will operate at incorrect setpoints on an R-410A system.
Modern residential systems predominantly use R-410A, which operates at significantly higher pressures than legacy refrigerants such as R-22 and R-404A. Using a pressure control with setpoints matched to the wrong refrigerant can result in nuisance trips, inadequate protection, or both. Always confirm that the replacement control's pressure range and refrigerant designation match the system's specifications before ordering.
