Controls Pressure

A pressure control is a safety and operating device that monitors refrigerant pressure at a designated point in the system and opens or closes an electrical circuit in response to preset pressure thresholds. When outdoor temperatures fall, the control cycles or modulates the condenser fan to prevent the system from operating at excessively low head pressure, which can cause liquid slugging, refrigerant floodback, and compressor damage. Head pressure controls are commonly specified for heat pumps, year-round commercial refrigeration, and rooftop units operating in cold climates.

An auto-reset pressure control automatically restores the circuit once system pressure returns to within the acceptable operating range. This is common for low-pressure controls where the triggering condition is less likely to cause immediate equipment damage. A manual-reset pressure control requires a technician to physically reset the switch after it trips, preventing the system from restarting until the underlying fault is diagnosed and corrected.

Selecting the correct reset type is not interchangeable: using an auto-reset high pressure control in an application that requires manual reset can allow a system to repeatedly restart in a fault condition, accelerating compressor damage. The system's wiring diagram and equipment documentation will specify which reset type is required.
