Matched Sets

A surplus matched HVAC system consists of indoor and outdoor components that are designed to communicate with each other and operate at optimal efficiency.

These components are engineered and laboratory-tested to work together as a unit. Purchasing a matched set eliminates the hassle of trying to figure out which components are compatible on your own.

Also, some systems carry a certified SEER2 (the federal efficiency standard) rating. In order for that rating to be valid, the indoor and outdoor units you use must reflect the exact combination that was tested. Mix unmatched components, and real-world performance can fall short of the advertised rating. In many cases, manufacturer warranty coverage requires a properly matched installation.

Buying a complete matched set removes the compatibility guesswork and ensures that your SEER2 rating (when applicable) will be accurate.

Every piece of HVAC equipment sold by Surplus City Liquidators is brand-new and never installed.

"Surplus", also known as overstock, describes where the inventory comes from, not its condition. Surplus City sources manufacturer overstock and end-of-production inventory directly from major HVAC brands. It’s equipment that was built, warehoused, and never put into service. None of it is used, returned, repaired, or refurbished.

Because Surplus City buys in volume directly from manufacturers and distributors, they are able to pass those savings to buyers. You get name-brand equipment at a price well below what you'd pay through a traditional HVAC supplier, without taking on any of the risk that comes with used equipment.

A matched HVAC set does not fall under one warranty. Warranty coverage depends on the specific product. Here's how it breaks down:

Many system components carry a standard manufacturer's warranty. Eligibility is noted on individual product pages and typically requires registration with the manufacturer and installation by a licensed HVAC technician. Check the product page before purchasing to confirm what coverage applies.

Closeout and end-of-production items may no longer be eligible for the manufacturer's warranty coverage. Surplus City notes this clearly in product descriptions so there are no surprises.

For items without manufacturer coverage, Surplus City offers its own 30-day warranty for $30. That warranty covers equipment startup failure from the date of delivery. It does not cover labor, refrigerant, parts replacement, or damage caused by external events such as improper installation or natural disasters.

Under either the manufacturer's program or Surplus City's own warranty, installation by a licensed HVAC contractor is required for coverage to apply.

HVAC system size is measured in tons of cooling capacity (1 ton = 12,000 BTU/hour), and the right size depends on your home's square footage, insulation quality, climate zone, window area, and ductwork.

Buying an oversized or undersized system causes real problems, including short cycling, humidity issues, uneven comfort, and higher energy bills. Getting the tonnage right matters as much as brand and efficiency rating.

The most accurate way to confirm the correct size is a Manual J load calculation, which a licensed HVAC contractor performs before installation. This calculation accounts for your home's specific characteristics rather than relying on square footage rules of thumb.

If you want to work through sizing and specs before purchase, Surplus City's technical inside sales team is available at 765-482-7000. They can help both contractors and homeowners identify the right matched condenser and air handler or other component combination for a given application.

There's no single right answer, but understanding the basics helps you make the right call for your budget and climate.

SEER2 replaced the older SEER rating as the federal efficiency standard in 2023. Higher numbers mean lower energy consumption over a cooling season. Federal minimums vary by region; any system at or above the minimum for your area is code-compliant for new installation.

Not all HVAC components contain SEER or SEER2 ratings, but the ones that do should be clearly marked. The discount matched HVAC system components with SEER or SEER2 ratings on Surplus City's site are labeled appropriately, so you can compare options directly. If you're replacing an older low-efficiency system, even a mid-tier SEER2 matched system will typically deliver meaningful savings on cooling costs.

Higher-efficiency tiers cost more upfront and can make sense in hot climates with long cooling seasons. In milder climates, the payback period on a premium-tier system may be longer than you'd expect. Our sales team at 765-482-7000 can help you run the numbers for your specific situation.
