General Tips for Identifying Your Outdoor Equipment
When it's time to replace your HVAC system, the first step is understanding the information on your current unit’s equipment tag. The model number contains essential details that help you determine the right replacement system.

Find the Model Number
The model number will be located on the yellow efficiency tag or the white detail tag. If one is missing don’t worry, you can use the other.

Look for the White Sticker
The white sticker is where your system information is listed. Typically, this is found on the back of the unit—where the hoses and power connect. This is where you’ll find the model number. In this example, it’s right at the top of the sticker. Write down the complete model number, each letter or number has a meaning.

How to Determine your Tonnage
No matter what the brand, you’ll find a number embedded in the model number that is divisible by 12. That is the nominal capacity (tonnage). Decoding this information ensures you choose a compatible option for your home’s heating and cooling needs. Other information will tell you voltage, hertz, and system specific features you may need if you want a direct replacement. A more thorough breakdown of how to read the full model number can be found at the bottom of this page.

Taking a Closer Look at One Example
Every manufacturer has a specifications document that will help you interpret the model number. In this example, the first letter of the model number connotes the manufacturer.
From there, you can scan the model number to look for that number that’s a multiple of 12. In this case, it’s 36. That means you’re looking at a 3-ton unit. Now you know how to shop!
Simply research your own manufacturer’s model number format online if you need to review further specifications. But in general, the nominal capacity is the best place to start.
